The brain and spinal cord are so important                                                                    that they comprise the only bodily system                                                                      fully encased inside of bone. As the skull                                                                      protects the brain, so the spinal column                                                                        surrounds and protects the brainstem and                                                                      spinal cord. The spine being divided into                                                                      two dozen movable vertebrae also allows us                                                             the ability to bend, twist, and move freely                                                                      without damaging the delicate nervous                                                                        system. The spinal vertebrae then serve as                                                                    points of attachment for the many spinal                                                                        ligaments and muscles.

The central nervous system has one primary                                                                  role: to adapt us to the stressors of our                                                                          environment. Each day and on quite a                                                                          regular basis in our fast-paced,                                                                                    industrialized world we are exposed to                                                                        chemical, physical, and emotional                                                                              stressors.

The nervous system coordinates the physiological response to this stress so that it may be appropriately processed and overcome, so that we may survive and thrive in spite of it. However, the nervous system can become overwhelmed by the accumulation of stress. When this occurs, a situation arises known as the “vertebral subluxation.” As stressful as life is in modern society, it should not come as a surprise that spinal subluxation occurs quite frequently and from the earliest of ages.

The vertebral subluxation is

characterized by dysfunction of

spinal joints, muscles, and other

soft tissues, with the most profound

consequence being nerve dysfunction.

Subluxation distorts and interferes with

the nerve signals that communicate

between brain and body. This distortion

causes a breakdown in the proper

regulation and integration of bodily

function. There are no direct symptoms

of subluxation. One can no more feel

distortion to nerve supply than he can

feel ideal nerve supply. However, if

left uncorrected the effects of this

neurological breakdown compound

and lead to a progressive loss of

health and vitality. Whether in a

moment or over time, this nerve

interference may cause or contribute

to any symptom or health challenge imaginable.

Chiropractic’s art of adjusting the spine is focused exclusively on locating and correcting these vertebral subluxations in order to restore optimal neurological communication and bodily function. Once liberated from this nerve interference, the body is able to heal and maintain health and vitality naturally and automatically from the inside-out. It speaks to reason that a well-functioning nervous system affords the best opportunity to not only reverse current health challenges, but to efficiently adapt to the many stressors of daily life while maintaining excellent health and well-being for a lifetime.
